Gariep

Private Hospital

Gariep Mobile Header

The hospital is located on the outskirts of Kimberley and offers beautiful views of the landscape. During construction, the Camelthorn trees (Acacia Erioloba) were carefully preserved, with the largest of these now serving as a key feature beyond the main patient passage and public courtyard.

The 146-bed multidisciplinary hospital enhances Mediclinic’s acute-care offering. The R260-million project includes a world-class surgical complex with five theatres, including two sophisticated multimedia theatres. Other specialised services include an emergency centre, high care and critical care units, a dedicated endoscopy suite and a radiography department.

Hospitals can often be confusing environments for patients and visitors to navigate. Mediclinic Gariep was designed to improve wayfinding within a hospital environment by providing clear linear movement corridors, improved wayfinding signage and single-storey construction. In minimising the requirement for vertical circulation, patient fall risk was further reduced.

The modular construction approach enabled easy master planning for future expansion, while the single level design improved critical functional adjacencies.

When construction commenced in 2013, Building Regulations required 100mm thick insulation in the roof which required purpose designed roof details, which included spacing brackets that could accommodate the thickness of the roof insulation below the sheeting, without compromising the efficiency of the insulation. This has since become a standard detail for many new buildings by the same specialist roof manufacturer.

The hospital’s design reflects the clients focus on sustainability and good corporate practices.

Natural daylight is increased by long narrow building shapes for all the wards and taller windows in the Critical Care Unit and High Care Unit. This has proven benefits including reducing pain, stress, and depression for patients, improving sleep and satisfaction, and benefiting staff as well. The buildings are also orientated to provide natural views of the surrounding veld and landscaped courtyards.

Sustainability

The hospital’s design reflects the clients focus on sustainability and good corporate practices. It features solar water heating, central ventilation through heat pumps, window shades, low-emission glass, insulated walls and roof, and a water-efficient garden with native plants and protected Camelthorn trees.
