Diverse Needs

The modern multi-storey hospital in Accra, Ghana, is a 179-bed healthcare facility designed to offer a comprehensive range of medical services to the community. With a robust infrastructure, the hospital provides access to multiple specialized departments including radiology, pathology, chemotherapy treatments and a full suite of surgical services with six operating theatres.

It also caters to the diverse needs of patients through its obstetrics, physiotherapy, emergency services and various inpatient wards. Additionally, the facility houses multiple consulting suites, enhancing its capacity to deliver personalized medical consultations and ongoing patient care.

Strategically Designed

The architectural design of the hospital considers and responds to the environmental, patient experience, and visitor legibility. The building’s façade features a perforated patterned cladding which is more than just aesthetically pleasing in its simple repetition. This design element serves multiple functional purposes: it offers increased flexibility in the interior layout and window placement, provides effective solar control, and acts as a privacy screen, thereby ensuring a comfortable environment for patients who require discretion and rest.

Strategically designed courtyards divide the upper floor into two wings. This design feature guarantees that all patient rooms receive ample natural daylight, contributing to a healing environment and reducing the reliance on artificial lighting. The layout also includes central passages that enhance the hospital’s navigability, making it easy for visitors and patients to find their way around the facility.

Function

Enhancing the hospital’s functionality and appeal, the upper floors include residential units with essential amenities. These amenities not only promise convenience with features like a gym and laundry facilities but also offer relaxation and recreational spaces such as a communal roof garden. This garden provides a quiet environment far above the street with stunning views of the cityscape, enriching the overall experience of residents and guests alike.

In producing this design, special care was given to the adjacencies of various departments. This is critical in healthcare design, as certain departments absolutely need to be grouped together to reduce risk to the patients. But with the site being so small in comparison with the programme requirements, triggering a multi-storey development, these adjacencies had to be interrogated even more carefully.

Multiple models (digital and physical) were used to determine space allocation and the effect of daylight on a small scale before getting into detail layouts. After this, generalized floor area layouts, expanding on various requirements, such as parking, emergency vehicle access and service areas were produced.

After many sketches and physical models, it was decided to clad the building in perforated panels, allowing freedom for the layouts while simplifying the building from the outside.

Space

Once the general space planning was finalized, the initial conceptual floor layouts could commence. Part of this process is having to develop a concept for the façade as well – as these two items impact one another significantly. However, due to the multi-storey approach, not every floor had a similar layout. This means that rooms and openings could not align on the façade, creating a disjointed and confusing elevation. To address this, a different approach was required. After many sketches and physical models, it was decided to clad the building in perforated panels, allowing freedom for the layouts while simplifying the building from the outside.

Overall, this hospital in Accra represents a significant advancement in the healthcare infrastructure in the city, combining advanced medical facilities with thoughtful architectural planning to meet the needs of its patients and staff efficiently and effectively.
