MEDFORUM
Private Hospital
Mediclinic Medforum is situated in the inner city of Pretoria. The project required careful investigation and documentation of the as-built conditions because of spatial and structural constraints.
The technical documentation had to be thoroughly developed to ensure a seamless connection between the existing hospital and the new addition.
The high-rise construction environment posed many construction phasing challenges: patient and contractor cross-over had to be avoided, hospital operations had to continue and the additional costs associated with a phased construction approach had to be minimised.
MULTI-SPECIALITY
As a multi-speciality facility, Mediclinic Medforum had to make provision for extraordinarily specialised equipment, contained in a physically constrained envelope. The co-ordination of equipment placement and services provision, like ventilation and electricity, required many hours of careful planning. Importantly, the equipment had to be placed to be readily accessible permitting easy maintenance.
In understanding each nook and cranny of the building, we were able to fit each element into the facility without compromising on practicality, operational efficiency or optimal facility management.
CONSTRUCTION
Our hospital construction knowledge and expertise enabled us to anticipate obstacles particular to healthcare facilities and avert them during the initial planning phases of the project.
Healthcare provision develops and changes frequently and so care delivery methods must adjust to match the increasingly fast pace of change. The upgrade to Mediclinic Medforum included redesigning parts of the existing interiors to permit greater operational efficiency and allow for future expansion.
Coupled with the technical challenges, the project brought with it the opportunity to aesthetically revitalise the existing building. The original hospital, conceived in the 1980s required an extensive facelift to create a coherent junction between the original and the new.
Strict cost-benefit analyses had to be done until a fit-for-purpose solution to the major façade upgrade was achieved.
The upgraded facility now provides additional services in a modernised environment showing that architecture can enrich lives and positively impact communities.
It was the first hospital in Pretoria to open a cardio-thoracic unit. The hospital offers patients a broad spectrum of professional medical services.
